LIBERALIZATION AND DEMOCRATIZATION IN EAST ASIA (東亞自由化與民主化) |
2 | The course is designed to be a comparative study on the process and outcome of liberalization, democratic transition and constitutional consolidation in East Asia, particularly in China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, South Korea and Singapore. A comparative-theoretical analysis on the literature of liberalization and democratization in other areas, e.g. Latin American and Eastern Europe, will be introduced. We will discuss common characteristics of liberal and democratic transitions in this area. The dynamics of internal politics and international interactions will be another focus. |

We will trace back the cross-strait relationship since 1945, and make a comparison of the “One China Policy” of the tripartite—the KMT, CCP and USA. The contrast of Taiwan nationalism and Chinese party-state patriotism will be another focus of this course. Students’ participation and discussion is a necessity. |

2 | After presenting background materials of the Chinese economy before 1949, the socialist era of 1949-1978, and the market transition since 1979, the course examines different aspects of the modern Chinese economy. It analyzes patterns of growth and development, including population growth and the one-child family policy; the rural economy, including rural organization and rural industrialization; industrial and technological development in urban areas; international trade and foreign investment; macroeconomic trends and cycles and the financial system; and the problems of environmental quality and the sustainability of growth. |

2 | This course introduces and studies the report based on a research project conducted by the World Band and the Development Research Center of the State Council, the People's Republic of China. The report estimates the socioecnomic development of Mainland China in 2030 and offers relevant policy recommendations. Relating topics include reform of industrial structure, technological development and innovation, environment protection, distribution equality, social security, as well as a win-win solution for China and the rest of the world. |
